We are taking off our masks and getting back to the office. It has been a long and exhausting journey. Here are a few ideas for a path to renewal. Perhaps one (or more) will work for you.

1.  Create a “Tomorrow Land” team.

Having something to look forward to is always energizing.  Create a multigenerational & diverse team to investigate, innovate, and inspire.  Include members with different views, like married-ins & younger generations.  The goal is to put together a small team to brainstorm opportunities for the future of the business and bring them back to leadership to consider.  They should seek out new ideas, uncover new energy and expand everyone’s thinking.  Then, once a decision is made, inspire action.

2. Plan a renewal retreat.

Who doesn’t like a party!  Get out, have some fun together, remember what bonds you together as a family.  The purpose of a renewal retreat is to energize the extended family, to remember the legacy, and inspire family members to develop and sustain their connection to the future of the business. It brings together the older and newer generations, all the family branches, blood descendants and married-ins, and even key advisers, non-family board members and executives.  This event is designed to cultivate new ideas and reconnect family members.  The energy will certainly renew passion for the mission, uncover new leaders, and regenerate the family bond that is the foundation of the business.

3. Refresh your Process.

Call it Spring Cleaning.  Do an evaluation of your processes to find what could be slowing down productivity and progress.  Leadership must face the reality that the original systems  that were put in place cannot last forever. Often having an outside eye, such as a consultant, can be most helpful with this evaluation.  Reflect on what is moving your mission and values forward, and what is not.  Modernize and make changes to optimize communication, flow and engagement.  Nothing like something new to energize and keep your team on their toes.

After the last two years of masks and “just getting by” we deserve a fresh start.  It is time to uncover and consider new alternatives to what we have always done.  It is time for a reboot!
